The streets of Paris are both a refuge and a world of confinement for 12-year-old Antoine Doinel; a soul misunderstood at home, suppressed at school, and colliding with society’s expectations at every corner.

In this film, which carries traces of his own childhood, Truffaut conveys with striking simplicity how the order established by adults collapses onto the fragile life of a child. The camera liberates itself in Antoine’s runs; it moves breathlessly through his lies, escapes, disappointments, and hopes. In every frame, there is a reminder of what cinematic sincerity can be. On the border of both freedom and uncertainty, the face of a child becomes an emblem of innocence bearing the weight of the world.
