“Z” Screening

A film that radically unsettles the language of political cinema: Costa-Gavras’s masterpiece Z returns to the big screen, presented by Othon.

Inspired by a real political assassination, Z is far more than a mere recounting of events; it is a cinematic exposure of state violence, bureaucracy, and organized deception. Set in Greece (a country never named, yet unmistakably familiar), the story begins with the public murder of an opposition parliamentarian. The killing is officially dismissed as an “accident,” but the persistence of a young and determined investigative magistrate gradually brings the state’s darker layers into view. As the film unfolds, it is not individual crimes that stand revealed, but the way crime itself is transformed into a systematic structure.

Taking its name from the Greek word Zei—“He lives”—Z resonates like a cry that keeps memory alive against the powers’ desire to erase it. Decades later, it remains urgent, unsettling, and vividly alive.
