A struggle to preserve human dignity: a war masterpiece, Diamonds of the Night, presented by Othon a one-time screening at Kadıköy Cinema!
Two young Jewish men escape from a train transporting them from one concentration camp to another and run endlessly through the depths of the forest. We do not know where they are going; we only know that they must not be caught. Diamonds of the Night offers a harrowing cinematic experience that conveys the horror of World War II not through grand narratives, but through the body, fear, and fragments of consciousness.
Considered one of the most radical works of the Czech New Wave, Jan Němec’s film deliberately fractures time and space.
The boundaries between reality and imagination, past and present dissolve; the viewer is trapped inside the minds of the characters. Dialogue is almost nonexistent—the narrative unfolds through breath, glances, hallucinations, and recurring images.
Like fleeting flashes of light in the darkness of the forest, the film’s “diamonds” are as fragile as they are hopeful. As escape itself becomes a state of existence, the instinct to survive confronts humanity with ruthless intensity.
