A silent and profound gaze by Chantal Akerman on the period of dissolution in Eastern Europe: “From the East”, on the big screen, presented by Othon.

Shot across a geography stretching from Germany to Russia shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the film unfolds without a conventional narrative or explanatory voice-over. By keeping the camera still in long takes or moving it slowly, Akerman records waiting bodies, bus stops, streets, and faces.

The postures, gazes, and silences of people make visible the traces that political transformation leaves on everyday life. The absence of dialogue invites the viewer to surrender to the rhythm and repetition of the images.

“From the East” reflects on exile, displacement, and states of waiting central themes in Akerman’s cinema through a geographical journey. Rather than offering a representation of the East, the film evokes the atmosphere of a world in transition, capturing a historical moment through a timeless observation.
