Screening of Norte

In our new screening program, we are presenting the 2013 film “Norte, The End of History” by Lav Diaz, one of the most significant names in contemporary cinema from the Philippines. The screening will take place on Saturday, January 18th, at 6:00 PM at Atlas 1948 Cinema!

About the Film:

A man is unjustly imprisoned for a murder he did not commit, while the real killer roams free. The killer is a disillusioned intellectual frustrated with his country’s endless cycle of betrayal and indifference. Meanwhile, the imprisoned man begins to find his life in jail more bearable, especially as he starts to uncover something mysterious within himself.

Inspired by Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Norte offers an epic and gripping tale of Fabian’s moral collapse. As a young and radical ideologist, Fabian defends his philosophy by proclaiming, “If we truly want to cleanse society, the solution is simple: eliminate the bad elements.” Driven by this belief, he murders a wealthy and ruthless woman, condemning a poor family to immense suffering.

The character of Fabian bears a striking resemblance to Ferdinand Marcos, who kept the Philippines under martial law for nearly a decade, offering a fresh perspective on today’s political discourse.
