One of the living legends of cinema, Portuguese director Pedro Costa’s masterpiece “Vitalina Varela” will be screened at the 1948 Atlas Cinema on May 25th!
After the death of her husband, Vitalina arrives in Lisbon only to realize that the life she had waited for over the years is no longer possible. All that remains are empty streets, silent neighbors, and the ghosts of a past buried in darkness. Brought to life with Pedro Costa’s poetic and stylized approach, the film portrays a woman’s grief, resistance, and inner awakening through silence and shadows. Vitalina Varela explores the sense of lost belonging and the personal tolls of migration with a deeply visual language.
