Revanche Screening

A striking psychological drama about two lovers unable to escape the grip of fate, weighed down by despair. The weight of conscience, the fire of revenge, and the wound of love: Revanche. Presented by Othon on August 24 at 1948 Atlas!

Making a powerful impression at Cannes in the year of its release, Revanche tells the striking story of two people bearing the heavy burden of crime and remorse, set against the sharp contrast between city and countryside.

Alex is a man with a dark past who longs for a fresh start. He plans a heist with the woman he dreams of building a life with—one that will change their fates. But things don’t go as planned; a single mistake irreversibly alters their lives, as well as the lives of strangers they have never met.

Revanche unfolds a harsh yet deeply moving story about morality, responsibility, and forgiveness. With its long takes, calm rhythm, and striking visuals, it emerges as a modern tragedy that questions the limits of revenge and absolution.

Director Götz Spielmann describes his film with these words: “I’m undecided: was it revenge, reconciliation? Or perhaps a search for identity? These are hollowed-out concepts that, in truth, don’t suit my way of working. Revanche is not a theory enriched with images, but a story. My films try to reach the deepest layers of life, asking questions not about social context but about existence itself. What fascinates me, what moves me, is to reach the essence of life. Beneath the conflict and pain that appear in my films lies a spark of optimism — the belief that life is not just a mistake, and that everything holds meaning.”

We thank the Austrian Cultural Office for making this screening possible.
