Zama Screening

Zama, regarded as one of the most important films of our time, will be screened with an Othon presentation on September 14 at Kadıköy Cinema!

Set in 18th-century Paraguay, the film follows Spanish official Don Diego de Zama, who spends years in the hope of a promotion, only to find himself increasingly trapped by his own impatience and the decay of the colonial order. Lucrecia Martel —one of the leading directors of contemporary cinema— adapts Antonio Di Benedetto’s cult novel into a visual epic about the metaphysics of waiting, the ghosts of colonialism, and the defeat of human desire.

Martel conveys the corruption of colonial bureaucracy, the solitude of the individual, and the mental fragmentation born of waiting through a poetic cinematic language. Her meticulous visual compositions, fused with nature’s unsettling yet mesmerizing presence, turn the film into a timeless experience.

Zama portrays not only the entrapment of a man within his fate, but also the destruction wrought by colonialism, the metaphysics of waiting, and humanity’s surrender to its own desires. Premiering at Cannes to great acclaim, the film is considered one of the most significant works of modern Latin American cinema.
