Regarded as one of the most original works in cinema history, The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach reconstructs the life of Johann Sebastian Bach through the diaries and letters narrated by his wife, Anna Magdalena Bach. Yet rather than offering a conventional biographical account, the film places musicians performing Bach’s works in historical locations and on period instruments at its centre, making the music itself the essential element of the narrative.

Composed almost entirely of performances recorded live, the film brings together cinema’s ability to capture time with the unique immediacy of musical performance. Blurring the boundaries between fiction and documentary, this approach does not dramatize Bach’s life, but instead creates an experience that carries his world into the present.
